Faculty and Staff
Fred Griffiths is from Klamath Falls, Oregon and has taught ESL for more than 20 years. He has a BA in English Literature from Southern Oregon University, an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a Ph.D. student in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Oklahoma State University. Fred’s interests are related to academic success, culture shock, and how international students adjust to university life.
Soha Elfeel, Ph.D.
Soha Elfeel is the academic coordinator and an ESL instructor at the English Language Institute (ELI), Oklahoma State University. She teaches grammar and composition, listening and speaking skills, and reading skills. Soha began working at the ELI in 2011. She has a doctorate degree in professional education studies from Oklahoma State University and a certificate of teaching English as a second language. Soha’s interests include academic writing and reading, culturally-responsive pedagogy, the sociocultural aspects of language learning, particularly the intersection of literacy, language, and culture in teaching English as an additional language.
Debra Flint Shores
Student Service Coordinator
Debra Flint Shores is originally from Stillwater, Oklahoma. She grew up with many teachers in her family and swore she would never become a teacher herself! However, as she recognized that her passion was in teaching culturally-diverse students, she entered the teaching profession and has had many fascinating experiences. She has taught ESL in many different states and countries for the past 30 years. Her special interests are in socio-linguistics, culturally-responsive pedagogy, literacy, and service-learning. At ELI she is also the Student Services Coordinator. Her love for teaching and students has been felt by people ages 4-84!
Ms Shores did her undergraduate work at the University of Kansas and her MA at Brigham Young University. She has an ABD in Curriculum Development and Professional Education Studies at Oklahoma State University.
Jodie Morris came from a small town in Oklahoma and was the first to graduate from a University in her family with a bachelors in education from Oklahoma State University. She has lived in Stillwater for over 11 years and enjoys helping others and seeing them succeed in life. She is very excited to work with the international students at the University where she graduated from.
Maya Moukaddem is a full time ESL instructor at the English language Institute (ELI), Oklahoma State University. She has a BA in English Language, a BA in English Literature, a Teaching Diploma and an MA in English Language. She has been teaching ESL for 25 years, and she teaches grammar and composition, listening and speaking skills, and reading skills.
Julie Kenyon is from Dallas, Texas. Her experience includes ten years teaching ESL to adults and teaching English and drama in Texas public schools. Julie has taught students from all over the world and enjoys learning about new cultures and helping students reach their full potential.
Maria Isabel Velasquez
Maria Velasquez earned her Bachelor degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Counseling and finished all of the class work in a PhD in Social Foundations of Education, all from Oklahoma State University. Her teaching experience goes from teaching English Literature at an International School in Caracas, Venezuela, to preparing students for admissions exams for American and European Universities, such as TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT, and GRE. Maria’s research focused on academic writing, and she has a special interest in the study of English grammar and composition.
Rich Kirby has been an instructor for the English Language Institute since 1991. He received his bachelor’s degree in Spanish Education and master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, both from Oral Roberts University. His love for teaching English and community work has brought him and his family to many countries in the world. He currently lives in Stillwater with his wife Jenny and seven kids.
Jonathan Marpaung earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Management Information System from Oklahoma State University. He is currently a doctoral student in Higher Education Leadership and Policy studies at Oklahoma State University. After working as an application developer for more than 10 years, he found his next calling in studying issues in higher education. His current topics of interest are expenses and enrollment in higher education, computational thinking, human performance technology, and international student enrollment. Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, he has been a resident of Stillwater, OK for more than 19 years. He is ecstatic to help students in their journey of learning English and navigate the wonderful campus of Oklahoma State University.
